Frequency of Hepatitis B and C in central Punjab.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the frequency of HBsAg and anti-HCV among apparently young health adults belonging to central Punjab. Design: Cross sectional observational study. Place and duration of study: Pathology department of CMH Sargodha from July 2006 to December 2006. Subjects and methods: A total of 2038 young healthy adults belonging to central Punjab were included in the study. HBsAg and anti-HCV screening was done by rapid tests kits (Chromatographic immunoassay) and positive cases were confirmed by ELISA method from AFIP Rawalpindi. Results: The district wise frequency of HBsAg and. anti-HCV in our study was Sargodha (5.85%, 3.01%), Khushab (1.81%, 1.55%), Mianwali (0.75%, 1.50%), Faisalabad (7.31%, 10.45%), Jhang (7.02%, 5.84%), Toba Tak Singh (6.25%, 7.5%) respectively. Conclusion: This study indicates that there is high frequency HBsAg and anti-HCV among young adults belonging to central Punjab particularly, in Faisalabad, Jhang and Toba Tak Singh districts.
