Thyroid Cancer: Malaysian experience in the head and neck setting of a University Hospital.
Pak J Otolaryngol Jan ;21(2):27-32.

The incidence of thyroid cancer (DTC) in Kelantan, a northern state of Malaysia, during a five year period from July 1999 to July 2004 is evaluated. This study has been carried out in the Head and Neck setting of Hospital University Science Malaysia. Thyroid surgery is routinely performed by general surgeons in Malaysia. Few articles have been published on thyroid cancer, as compared to multinodular goitre (MNG), from the peninsular Malaysia. The paper retrospectively studied 102 cases of thyroid masses referred to the ORL clinic of University Science Malaysia (USM) for its surgical management. The demographic data, symptoms of presentation, prediction of thyroid cancer, sensitivity and specificity of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and frozen section microscopy (FSM) versus ultimate histopathology as the gold standard are analyzed. Treatment modality including operative procedures, and validity of management protocol in practice are also evaluated. Controversies related to extent of primary disease clearance and the management of neck for metastasis are specially discussed.
