Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Associated with Criminally Induced Abortion (CIA) - A 10 years review at Lahore General Hospital Lahore.

A total number of 2085 cases of criminally induced abortion came in Gynaecology Ward during a period of ten years. Incidence of CIA was 13.65%. 89.54% were first trimester abortions while 10.55% were 2nd trimester abortions. The reasons for termination were unplanned pregnancy (39.42%), illegal abortion. (Patient unmarried, widow, divorced) (34.72%) and poverty (25.85%). The commonest method of termination was insertion of stick of tree / laminaria tent (45.86%) and D&C (41.39%) by untrained health personals. 5.80% patients presented with mild symptoms i.e. fever, foul smelling vaginal discharge. Peritonitis occurred in 50.93% cases. Laparotomy was done in 33.47% cases - showed perforation of uterus in 12.85%, perforation of gut in 2.68% and perforation of urinary bladder in 0.57%. Renal failure developed in 25.37% case, jaundice / hepatic failure in 8.44%, pulmonary complications in 3.11% and DVT in 1.15%. 5.08% patients presented with mixed picture.
