Changing Antibiotic Sensitivity Pattern of Vibrio Cholerae O-1 isolates at a Tertiary Care Hospital in Karachi.
J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;10(4):138-9.

Cholera is endemic in Karachi and Vibrio cholerae are frequently isolated in most of the microbiology laboratories. A total of 160 Vibrio cholerae O-1 strains were isolated from suspected diarrheal stool specimens during 1996-1999. Antibiotic sensitivity pattern of all the isolates was studied by Modified Baur and Kirby method. Sensitivity of the Vibrio cholerae isolates to both the ampicillin and doxycycline decreased from 42.10% and 57.14% in 1996 to 0% for both the antibiotics in 1999. All except one isolate was found sensitive to cotrimoxazole, whereas, decline in chloramphenicol sensitivity was very small. Resistance to nalidixic acid has emerged in 1998, and in 1999, 35% of the isolates were found resistant to it. Sensitivity to the fluorinated quinolones including norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin was 100%a. Cholera preven tion and sensitivity tests of more antibiotics for its treatment is recommended.
