Second Toe to Thumb Transfer Experience in 14 Patients.
J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;10(7):242-5.

Loss of the thumb is a significant disability. The best reconstruction is to replant any detached tissue of thumb. This is not often possible in our setup due to lack of awareness among patients, the medical community, and paucity of centres with expertise of microvascular reconstruction in the country. Although various procedures have been used for thumb reconstruction, toe transfers have become the standard against which other methods are compared. In the last five years, 14 patients with thumb amputations underwent reconstruction using second toe to hand transplantation. All the patients were young males. Gun shot/splinter wounds were most common cause of thumb loss. All the transplanted toes survived completely. Functional and esthetic results were good. There was no significant complication and donor site morbidity was minimal.
