Psychosocial impacts of infertility: comparison of fertile and infertile couples on psychological, sexual and marital functioning.
Surgimed Med Dent J Jan ;1(1):19-23.

Objective: To examine psychosocial, psychosexual, and emotional impacts of infertility. It was hypothesized that infertile couples would experience significantly more depression and report more problems compared to fertile couples. Study design: It was a comparative analytical study. Place & Duration: Study was conducted at Infertility Advisory Center (IAC) Lahore and Ante-Natal clinic at the same premises. Material & Methods: Sample comprised of fifty infertile couples seeking treatment for their primary infertility at Infertility Advisory Center, Lahore and fifty couples attending Antenatal Clinic. Beck Depression Inventory, Life Event Scale and Locke- Wallace Marital Adjustment Test were used for assessment. Results: Analysis indicated emotional stress, depression, sexual problems and poor marital relationship in infertile couples, especially females. The fertile couples remained un-effected by such pressures. Moreover traditional roles seem to impose psychological and psychosocial problems on infertile couples irrespective of the one in whom the etiological problem was identified. Conclusion: The findings strongly support that the couples undergoing different treatment procedures for their infertility need marital counseling and sex therapy. .Keywords: Infertility, Psychosocial Impacts
