Outcome of Acute Renal Failure Following Snakebite.
J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;10(10):384-6.

Acute renal failure (ARF) is one of the serious complications of snakebite, which can cause hemoglobinuria, hyperkalemia, rhabdomyolysis and septicemic shock. The aim of this study was to show that acute renal failure could successfully be treated in a majority of snakebite victims by conservative methods alone, without resorting to dialysis. A ten-year study from 1 st January, 1990 to 31 st December, 1999 was carried out by the Department of Nephrology, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), in collaboration with National Poison Control Center (NPCC), JPMC. Around sixty to a hundred snakebite victims are received annually at the NPCC of JPMC from various parts of southern Sindh. Out of a total 864 cases of snakebite which came to JPMC during this period, 72 developed acute renal failure either at presentation or during hospitalization were referred to the Department of Nephrology for further management. Of these 68 patients survived with reversal of ARIF and no sequelae. 4 patients died due to complications including septicemia, pulmonary edema and Disseminated Intravascular Coagulopathy (DIC).
