Evaluation of results of medical approach following operative treatment of supracondylar fractures in children: a study of 60 consecutive cases.

Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the clinical results after operative treatment of Gartland type-III supracondylar fractures in children by medial approach. Study Design: A prospective case series study. Place and Duration of Study: District Head Quarter Teaching Hospital Sargodha. Patients and Methods: This study was based on 60 consecutive cases of supracondylar fractures of humerus received through emergency and out patient department of DHQ Teaching Hospital Sargodha from July, 2007 to Dec, 2008. There were 45 male and 15 female. Male to female ratio was 3:1. Age range was 3 to10 years. All these injuries were operated with in 2 weeks of initial trauma through medial approach with two parallel K-wires. Patients were followed up for 3 months. Results: 80 percent of patients had excellent results, 15.6% good results and fair 4.4%. Conclusion: Early operation and early rehabilitation after surgery on Gartland type-III supracondylar fractures provided best results. Back slab was applied for only 3 weeks. Achievement of full range of motion was the main goal of study and it was achieved in 8 to 12 weeks after surgery.
