Surgical Management of Rectal Carcinoma: A Three Years Experience at Mayo Hospital.

Data were collected of 37 patients admitted to hospital with a new diagnosis of rectal carcinoma in three years period. Of 37 patients, 16 (43.24%) had tumor of upper rectum, 6 (16.21%) in the middle and 15 (40.5%) patients in lower rectum. 36 (97.29%) with adenocarcinoma and 1 (2.70%) patient having lymphoma. Resection of the primary disease was achieved in 34 patients (91.89%) and this was deemed curative in 29 patients (85.29%), 3 (8.01%) of all patients had inoperable or metastatic disease at the time of presentation. Overall, 30 days operative mortality was 2.70 percent. Anterior resections were performed in 17 (45.94%). Hartmann in 06 (16.21%) and Abdominoperineal resection in 11 (29.72%) patients. Incidence of rectal carcinoma is much higher in younger age group (40 years) and resection of the primary tumor is the only hope for cure in these patients.
