Assuring adequacy of educational resources to improve quality of basic nursing education.
Pak J Med Res Jan ;50(1):37-41.

Background: Adequate and appropriate educational budgetary resources are fundamental to improve the quality of nursing education. There is little evidence to support that under the constraints, nursing schools meet the targets set by the Pakistan Council of Nursing. Objectives: To see the perceptions of the nurses about the level of available resources in schools, their impact on quality of education. Is there a need to develop a continuous quality improvement system. Subjects and Methods: This was a descriptive qualitative case study that was undertaken as a part of the PhD research. A purposive sample of seventy-one nurses were selected and interviewed in individual as well as in focus groups. The data were further supported by the analysis of the Pakistan Nursing Council’s policies and resource allocation model in the government funded schools. Results: Deficient resources in schools and absence of an effective quality assurance mechanism were identified as the big hindrance to quality improvement efforts. Conclusions: Considering the current situation, recommendations are made to develop a continuous quality improvement system by the Pakistan Nursing Council which would ensure adequate resource provision in schools. Policy message: Development and implementation of quality assessment tools are mandatory to improve resource allocation in health educational institutes. (Review article).
