Demographic characteristics and frequency of complications in children with measles admitted to a tertiary care hospital in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Objectives: To study the demographic characteristics of measles infection in children, their vaccination status and the pattern and frequency of its various complications. Material and Methods: This hospital based descriptive study was carried out at the Department of Paediatrics, Post Graduate Medical Institute, Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar over a period of one year. Information from 310 patients with measles was recorded on a proforma about their demographic features, vaccination status and complications. Results: Three hundred and ten patients with measles were studied. The age range was from seven months to thirteen years with mean age of 3.18 years with standard deviation of ± 2.78. Most of the patients were below 3 years of age. Male patients outnumbered female patients with 52.3% and 47.7% respectively. 57.1% patients were vaccinated. Pneumonia accounted for 51.4% of complications. Mortality rate was 8.1%. Conclusion: Measles, a preventable communicable disease is quite common in our community and many children with this infection present with complications.
