Hoarseness and laryngeal pathology.

This study was conducted at Rawalpindi General Hospital in patients with hoarseness of voice for more than four weeks duration. Every patient was admitted and had direct laryngoscopy and biopsy under general anaesthesia/local anaesthesia. Out of 80 patients, 18% had inflammatory lesions, 10% had pseudotumours, 11°/a had benign tumours and 69°/a had malignant tumours. Smoking, Niswar, Pan and alcohol were main aetiological factors for malignant disease. Male to female ratio was higher in malignant tumours. Patient who had surgery with post operative radiotherapy, showed better long term survival in malignant tumours. Early presentation and diagnosis is of paramount importance in long term survival of patients.
