Pak J Med Health Sci Jan ;5(1):64-7.

Preterm labour refers to the onset of labour after the gestation of viability (24-28wks) and before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy. Different Tocolytics are now being used to reduce the uterine contractibility and prolonging the pregnancy for better fetal outcome. Objective: Objective of this study is to compare oral nifedipine and intravenous salbutamol as better and effective Tocolytics. Study setting: Obstetrics and Gynaecology department of Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Rahim Yar Khan during 01-01-2010 to 30-06-2010. Study design: Quasi – Experimental study. Material and methods: Total 60 patients were included and divided into two groups. One group of patients were given nifedipine and other group was given salbutamol. Results: Total 60 patients were included in the study divided into two groups side effects observed were palpitation, nausea/vomiting, Headache, Chest Pain, Hypotension out of which chest pain and hypotension were statistically non-significant (P-value 0-15 & 0-71 respectively). Effect of both drugs on uterine contraction & prolongation of pregnancy were also studied, both were statistically non-significant (P-value 0.09, 0.02 respectively). Conclusion: This study concludes that nifedipine is a useful Tocolytics agent compare able in efficacy to ß-agonist with fewer fetomaternal side effects.
