Patient satisfaction in two tertiary care hospitals of Rawalpindi.

Background : To determine the level of patient satisfaction of medical and paramedical staff at tertiary care hospitals. Methods: A descriptive cross sectional study was performed in outpatient departments of two tertiary care hospitals, Holy Family Hospital (HFH) and Rawalpindi General Hospital (RGH), affiliated with Rawalpindi Medical College , during the year 2008. A total of 105 patients who came for various reasons irrespective of their age, sex and ailment were selected by convenient sampling. Data was collected by using a structured questionnaire. Results: Of the total 105 patients 17%, 51% and 32% covered the distance up to 2, 3-5 and greater than 5 kilometers respectively to reach the hospital. 65% claimed that doctors had explained them the outcome of their diseases. 43% respondents were provided with prescribed medicines by the health care providers while 57% did not receive any of the prescribed medicines. 62% found the attitude of the doctors to be satisfactory while 71% were not charged for the services they received in tertiary care hospitals. 69% were satisfied with the time spent by the doctors in examining them while 31% were dissatisfied. 58% received the laboratory reports in time while 88% respondents were satisfied with the quality of laboratory tests. Conclusion: Doctors should give proper attention to the patients. Medicines and diagnostic services should be easily accessible to the patients.
