A Nine year experience of Eclampsia at Liaquat Medical College Hospital, Hyderabad.
Biomedica Jan ;12(1):1-7.
During a 9 year period 256 cases of eclampsia were managed at Maternity Unit-1 of this Hospital, giving an incidence of 2.04% (256/12, 542 total deliveries). Amongst them, 55% patients were primigravid, 51% had postpartum eclampsia and 48% developed convulsions at 37 weeks gestation. Diazepam was used as anticonvulsant, while methyldopa infusion and sublingual nifedipine were used as antihypertensive agents. Amongst them 59% patients delivered vaginally, 39% had Caesarean delivery, whereas 3 expired undelivered. Perinatal mortality was 63%, whereas maternal mortality was 8.2% (21 out of 256). Intracerebral haemorrhage was the leading cause of maternal death due to eclampsia. These findings emphasize the need for prevention of eclampsia by picking up the cases of pre-eclampsia from the community at an early stage, vigilant antenatal care, maternal stabilization before and during transfer to the specialized unit and intensive care monitoring at the hospital.
