Effectiveness of conventional chest physiotherapy versus manual hyperinflation during postural drainage of ventilated ##COPD patients.

The Purpose of Study: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of conventional chest physiotherapy as compare to manual hyperinflation during postural drainage of ventilated COPD patients. Methodology: A randomized controlled trial of duration 6 months was conducted in Services hospital Lahore. The total 50 patients were recruited and assigned randomly, 25 in each group. Control group received postural drainage, while experimental group received manual hyperinflation therapy. The improvement in heart rate, respiratory rate, SPO2 and FIO2 was measured and compared in each group. Results: The results show that out of total 50 patients 35(70%) were male and 15(30%) were female. The mean heart rate in the group A after 10 min of CPT session was 104.32±12.52 while in group B was 94.52±15.31. There was significant difference was observed in the lowering of heart rate as p-value comes out to be 0.017(<0.05). The mean respiratory rate in group A was 24.8±9.75 while in group B 17.72±4.84. P-value was 0.002(<0.05), The mean value of the SPO2 94.78±2.78 in group A while 96.72±1.45 in group B and P-value noted was 0.003 (<0.05), the mean value of FIO2 was 25.28±7.5 and in group B was 32.64±11.03. P-value was 0.008(<0.05). The p-values show that there is significant difference in both groups. Conclusions: It is concluded that there is significant difference in effectiveness of conventional chest physiotherapy as compare to manual hyperinflation during postural drainage of ventilated COPD patients. Thus it is determined that manual hyperinflation during postural drainage is better option than conventional chest physiotherapy.
