Ann Abbasi Shaheed Hosp Karachi Med Dent Coll Jan ;4:157-62.

T.U.R.P. is still the treatment of choice in prostatic hypertrophy. Before T.U.R.P was introduced, open prostatectomy in the form of either Retropubic / Transvesical / Perineal were the treatment of prostatic hypertrophy. Retropubic prostatectomy is still widely performed in big prostates. Newer methods are being evaluated like- Laser prostatectomy, Thermotherapy, transurethral needle ablation of prostrate etc. They are still in experimental stages. Indications are that TU.R.P is still the best treatment option for BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia). Between March 1995 till February 1998, 636 patients presented at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital with prostatic symptoms. Out these 636 patients diagnosed as Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy or B.P.H, 68 patient were treated medically with drugs like. Fenestride (alpha reductase) & alpha one adrenergic blocking agents like Doxazosin & Terazosin. 78 patients underwent open prostatectomy while the majority i.e. 470 patients had T.U.R.P (74%). This paper highlights the T.U.R.P experience at A.S.H.
