Chronic liver disease related mortality pattern in a tertiary care hospital.

Objective: To describe the mortality pattern in chronic liver disease patients admitted in a tertiary care centre. Study design, settings and duration: Descriptive case record analysis conducted in Shifa International Hospital, Islamabad, from June 2011 to May, 2012. Patients and Methods: Patient's hospital records were reviewed. Key abstracting variables included primary diagnosis of Chronic Liver Disease, patient’s demographics, admitting service and cause of death. Data was analysed using SPSS v 16. Results: There were 1294 (3.95%) mortalities. Out of which, 966 (74.65%) were due to various medical causes. Out of 966 deaths, 99 (10.24%) were due to Chronic Liver Disease. Hepatic encephalopathy (44.4%), gastrointestinal bleeding (31.3%) and ascites (10.1%) were the major presenting symptoms in those who died. Conclusion: Chronic liver disease was one of the leading causes of death in our center. Hepatic encephalopathy and GI bleed were the main presenting features in these patients.
