Pak J Surg Jan ;29(4):248-51.

Objective: To assess the role of fi ne needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of salivary gland swellings with histopathological correlation. Study design: A prospective study. Methodology: One hundred forty patients were studied prospectively from august 2001 to October 2010.All these swellings were underwent FNAC using 10 cc syringes with 22 no. needle & histomorphology was assessed. Results: Among the 140 patients 80% of them were noeplastic including 61% benign and 31% malignant while 20% were non neoplastic. Th e most common benign neoplasm was pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most frequent malignant lesion. Th e maximum number of cases among the non neoplastic were of chronic sialadenitis. In our study FNAC has a sensitivity of 94.54% and specifi city of 80.95% for the neoplastic lesions. Conclusions: FNAC was found to be a useful diagnostic tool in the evaluation of salivary gland swellings due to its simplicity, a painless technique, excellent patient compliance, rapid diagnosis & cost eff ective .
