Epidemiological observations on appendicitis in peshawar, pakistan.

Aims: To determine the seasonality and frequencies of acute appendicitis in diff erent age group and gender. Setting: Surgical ward, Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar from January 2006 to December 2007. Design: Descriptive cross sectional study Materials & Methods: Data of all diagnosed cases of appendicitis aged 5 years to 70 years were recorded from Hospital ward and operation theatre record books, excluding cases with other conditions confusing the diagnosis i.e. pregnancy, urinary tract infection, ovarian cysts. Statistical Analysis used: Data was analysed with the help of SPSS for windows version 17. Results: Total number of patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis during this period was 559, ranging from 5 years age to 70 years with a mean age of 24.66 years (SD+11.96) including 325 male patients and 234 female patients (male to female ratio of 1.4:1). Acute appendicitis was most prevalent in teen age group (47.76%). Th e frequencies of appendicitis were highest in summer and spring seasons (28.5% each) and lowest in autumn (21.5%). Conclusion: In this study obvious diff erences were observed in the frequencies of acute appendicitis for diff erent seasons, age groups and genders with higher prevalence in teen age group, male gender and spring and summer seasons.
