The Concentrations of Ascorbic Acid in Aqueous Humour from Cataract and Glaucoma Patients.
Pak J Ophthalmol Jan ;15(4):173-7.

The concentrations of ascorbic acid were determined in aqueous humour obtained from both cataract and glaucoma patients using high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection (HPLC-ECD). In cataract patients, the concentration of ascorbic acid was significantly higher (p < 0.05) In the younger age group (27-50 years) compared to the other groups, l.e. 51-70 and 71 years & above. On the basis of the concentrations (mean*SEM) of ascorbic acid In aqueous humor, the glaucoma patients (n - 32) were divided Into 3 groups; one with the very low level of ascorbic acid (n = 14, 53.1+/-74mg L-1), the second with normal range (n - 14; 249.5+/-27.5mg L-1), and the third with higher concentration range (n = 4; 936.O+/-137.Omg L-1). These studies indicate that ascorbic acid may play an important role in glaucoma.
