Angiographic severity of coronary artery disease in patients with and without metabolic syndrome.
J Cardiovascular Dis Jan ;9(1):1-7.

Objectives: To determine the frequency of metabolic syndrome in patients of coronary artery disease (CAD) undergoing coronary angiography. And also to compare the frequency of severe coronary artery disease in patients with and without metabolic syndrome (Met S). Materials and Methods: This Cross sectional survey was conducted at the Department of Cardiology, Punjab Institute of Cardiology, Lahore from January to July 2010. Two hundred patients of CAD who were planned to undergo coronary angiography were enrolled after fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients were divided into two groups, Group A, (patients with Met S) and Group B, (patients without Met S). All patients underwent coronary angiography and severity of CAD was compared between the two groups. Results: Mean age of patients with Met S was 54±10.3 years, and without Met S was 51.4±10.5 years. There were 70(75%) males and 24(25%) females in Group A, while Group B consisted of 80(76%) males and 26(24%) females. Frequency of Met S in the study population was 47%. Severe CAD was 66% in patients in Group A as compared to 46% in patients in Group B (p=0.005). Conclusion: Frequency of Met S was high in our study. Severe CAD was more prevalent in patients with Met S. Older patients had higher prevalence of Met S and severe CAD than younger patients.
