Pak Paed J Jan ;42(1):37-41.

Objective: To assess the use of oral sucrose as an analgesic in circumcision for effective pain control in infants by assessing the perception and familiarity of it among the clinicians undertaking this procedure. Setting: This study was conducted over a time period of 6 months with a sample size of 200. Methodology: A cross-sectional survey was conducted, using uniform questionnaire with both close and open-ended questions. The questionnaire was filled by doctors performing circumcision and working in various hospitals and clinics of Lahore. Results: It was observed that 43% of the participants were aware of the use of oral sucrose as an analgesic in infants for circumcision. While 57% were those who lacked familiarity to the current recommendations. 6% demonstrated knowledge and its application in their clinical practice; this cohort also used oral sucrose as analgesic during other minor procedures e.g. 3% showed clinical application for IV line insertion, 2% for minor accidental injuries or OPD procedures such as cyst excision. Conclusion: According to our study most of the doctors were unaware of the benefits of use of oral sucrose as an effective analgesic for procedural pain in particular circumcision for our study; this included a large proportion of doctors who felt it was an ineffective therapy. However, we found it the fact that the clinicians who lacked knowledge were open to learning and future implementation in their clinical practice.
