Subdural Empyema Secondary to Otitis Media: Outcome of Medical vs Surgical Intervention.
Pak Paed J Jan ;38(3):189-92.

Subdural empyema is a fatal intracranial complication of disease such as sinusitis and chronic supporative otitis media. Mortality associated with this condition is high if not managed promptly. We report a case of a 9-yr old boy presenting with Fever, Headache, drowsiness and projectile vomiting. History revealed that the patient had continuous purulent discharge from the left ear in the past year. Radiological and laboratory investigations were done and the patient was diagnosed as having a subdural empyema secondary to Otitis Media. Conservative management of the patient was initiated. Due to unsatisfactory progress the patient was then treated surgically with complete recovery post-operatively. It was thus concluded that a surgical approach offers a successful treatment strategy as compared to medical treatment alone in the management of a subdural empyema.
