Comparison of Side Effects of Intravenous Phloroglucinol Versus Intravenous Drotavarine in Primigradvidas Presenting in Active Phase of Labour.
J Fatima Jinnah Med Coll Lahore Jan ;7(2):95-7.

Background: The problems and hazards of prolonged labour, both for the mother and foetus have been recognized for many years. The mother is exposed to high risk of infection, ketosis and obstructed labour while the foetus faces the danger of infection, asphyxia and excessive cranial moulding. Spasmolytic drugs or smooth muscle relaxants help to relieve cervical spasm and facilitate cervical dilatation. Smooth muscle relaxants inhibit impulses in the form of spasm that impairs the effective cervical dilatation. Objective: To compare the side effects of intravenous phloroglucinol and intravenous drotavarine in primigravidas presenting in active phase of labour. Subjects and Methods: This randomized controlled trial study was carried out at Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Lady Willingdon Hospital, Lahore between 8th April 2012 to 7th October 2012. Results: Majority of the patients in both groups between 20-25 years of age i.e. 57.2% (n=143) in group A and 61.6% (n=154) in group B. According to gestational age, which showed 82.8% (n=207) in group A and 87.6% (n=219) in group B between 38-39+7 weeks while on comparison of both drugs administered intravenously reveals 1.3% (n=3) in group A and 12.4% (n=31) in group B with headache, 0.4% (n=1) in group A and 5.2% (n=13) in group B with tachycardia while post-partum haemorrhage was recorded 3.2% (n=8) in group A and 16.4% (n=41) in group B. P value was (0.05 in all variables which shows a significantly higher risk of side effects in patients treated with drotavarine group. Conclusion: Side effects of intravenous phloroglucinol are significantly less than intravenous drotavarine in primigravidas presenting in active phase of labour.
