Comparison of Maternal Complications with and without Fibroid Uterus in Females Presenting During Third Trimester of Pregnancy.

Background: This study aims to determine frequency of fibroid uterus in females presenting during third trimester and compare maternal complications in females with and without fibroid uterus. Methods: This six months descriptive case series was carried out at Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit-II, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Lahore. Total 100 females meeting the inclusion criteria were enrolled from OPD of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore. Written informed consent was taken. Patients? information like name, age, gestational age, parity and contact number was obtained. Females were separated into two groups according to the presence or absence of fibroids. Results: In this study, mean age was calculated as 28.7+4.16 years, mean gestation age was 37.49+1.54 weeks, mean parity was 3.62+1.32 paras, frequency of fibroid uterus in females presenting third trimester of pregnancy was recorded in 8% (n=8) of the cases. Comparison of the maternal complications in females with and without uterine fibroids presenting in third trimester of pregnancy shows that out of 8 cases with uterine fibroid 50% (n=4) and 10.87% (n=10) out of 92 cases without uterine fibroid had cesarean section (p-value=0.01). Preterm labour was recorded in 37.5% (n=3) with uterine fibroid and 6.52% (n=6) without uterine fibroid (p-value=0.02). Post-partum hemorrhage was recorded in 12.5% (n=1) with uterine fibroid and 2.17% (n=2) without uterine fibroid (p-value=0.22). Conclusion: Frequency of uterine fibroids in third trimester was higher and these cases were having significantly higher risk of maternal complications when compared with pregnancies without uterine fibroids.
