Hallervorden – Spatz Disease: a rare entity in Pediatric Neurology.

Hallervorden – Spatz disease (HSD) is a rare disorder characterized by progressive extra pyramidal dysfunction and dementia, with onset most commonly in late childhood or early adolescence. An eleven year old girl is described who had gradual onset of dystonic posturing of the trunk and extremities starting at the age of eight years; later developing toe walking, tongue protrusion and slurred speech. Subsequent disease course was characterized by deteriorating school performance and progressive mental impairment. On the basis of the clinical syndrome, neuro-imaging findings and exclusion of other causes, a diagnosis of Hallervorden –Spatz disease was made.
