Incidence and outcome of various types of Dehydration (biochemical) in Children with Acute Diarrhea.
Pak Paed J Jan ;26(4):191-94.

Acute diarrheal diseases are a leading cause of childhood morbidity, mortality and malnutrition in developing countries. Diarrhoea is defined as passing of 3 or more stools in a day, of consistency softer than usual or one watery stool per day. This study was conducted to determine the incidence of various types of dehydration (biochemical) in children who presented with acute diarrhea and its response to rehydration therapy. The incidence of diarrhea was 38.7% in admitted cases and mortality rate was 2%. The incidence of isotonic dehydration was 81%, hypotonic was 12% and hypertonic dehydration was 7%. Biochemical response was observed within 24 hours in isotonic and hypotonic dehydration, while in cases of hypertonic dehydration response was within 48 to 72 hours. No complication was observed during rehydration of hypernatremic type of dehydration.
