Prescription Pattern`s Assessment in Pediatric Patients.

Background: Pediatrics deals with a special population, so dosage of the drugs need to be individualized for every patient. Rationality of prescribing pattern must be ensured to improve patient?s quality of life. This study aims to assess prescribing patterns in pediatric patients. Materials and Methods: A prospecptive observational study was carried out for a period, from July, 2017 to August, 2017 in pediatric units of different hospitals of Lahore, Pakistan. 100 prescriptions were collected by convenience random sampling technique. Data was collected by reviewing patient?s prescription and then assessment of its rational use was made. The results were tabulated and presented in the form of graphs. Results: Prescribing trend was brand based, in 50% of the prescriptions antibiotics were prescribed. Among them 69.49% belonged to cephalosporins and 20.33% amoxicillin. 6R?s were present only in 60% prescriptions while therapeutic duplication was observed in only 12% of the prescriptions. In 14% prescriptions polypharmacy was present, proper instructions for medication use were observed in 46% of prescriptions while 86% prescriptions were legible, with proper parts of prescriptions and prescriber?s signature. Conclusion: Cephlosporins were most commonly prescribed drugs, abdominal pain, acute pharyngitis, eye infection, fever, & chest infection were most prevalent diseases and were found to be primary cause for hospitalization among pediatric patients.
