Mortality in patients with Acute Pancreatitis.
Pak J Gastroenterol Jan ;16(2):35-8.

This study was performed to see the mortality at one-month interval in patients with acute pancreatitis. It was a multi-centre cross-sectional study including 52 subjects in Mayo and Services Hospital Lahore over a period of three years (01-07-1998 to 31-12-2000). Patients were diagnosed on the basis of their clinical presentation and raised serum amylase levels supplemented by serum lipase levels in some cases. Mortality observed in our patients was above 20% (11 out of 52 patients died). All patients classified as mild cases on Ranson`s scoring were alive at one month and all patients classified as very severe cases on Ranson`s scoring were dead at one month. It is, therefore, recommended that acute pancreatitis should be managed more aggressively and actively to reduce the high mortality rate in patients with acute pancreatitis.
