Crystalline Maculopathy in Type-1 Diabetes Mellitus.
Ophthalmol Update Jan ;14(1):108-10.

Crystalline deposits in retina may be associated with wide variety of disorders including ocular disorders, systemic disorders and certain drugs. A-20 year old girl, with Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus presented to us with crystalline maculopathy in which we could not find any known cause, after thorough investigations. The cause of maculopathy in our case is probably an atypical, early presentation of Bietti crystalline dystrophy, which needs subsequent long term follow up, to see for ERG, colour vision and visual fields changes to develop, as these changes may be absent in early stages. It could also be an unusual presentation of familial dominant drusens. But we can also relate it to the presence of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and side effects of insulin, which has never been reported in literature.
