Pak Paed J Jan ;43(1):53-6.

Background: Umbilical granuloma is a benign abnormality commonly seen in neonates. It becomes apparent after the umbilical cord sheds off. Multiple treatment options are available to treat umbilical granuloma including common salt application, electrocautry or cryosurgery, excision of granuloma, double ligatures technique, alcohol wipes, topical steroid ointment. All treatments are curative but have their advantages and disadvantages. Objective: To assess the effectiveness and safety of common salt application on umbilical granuloma in infants Material and Methods: This prospective multi-centered study was conducted from January 2016 to January 2018 in 3 hospital of Sialkot. A total of 82 infants of age groups between 4 to 12 weeks with clinically diagnosed umbilical granuloma were enrolled in the study after informed consent. Parents were advised and trained to apply common salt for 30 min on discharging umbilical granuloma twice daily for 3 consecutive days. Patients were examined on day 3 and 7 of follow-up to see the response to treatment and complications. Results: Mean age of the study population was 7.19 ± 2.56 weeks with slight male predominance (54.9% males to 45.1% females). Complete regression was noted in 78 patients (95.1%) while no regression was observed in 4 (4.9%) patients. No complication was observed except self limiting reddish black discharge from umbilicus on the first day of common salt application. Conclusion: Application of common salt in umbilical granuloma is efficacious as well as safe and easy to use by parents.
