Rawal Med J Jan ;44(2):326-9.

Objective: To assess the efficacy of the ozone in treatment of chronic anal fistula. Methodology: This Non Randomize Clinical Trial was carried out at General Surgery Department, Nishtar Hospital and Bakhtawar Amin Hospital, Multan and Sahiwal Medical College, Sahiwal from December 20, 2016 to February 28, 2018 and included 57 patients of anal fistula. Number of sessions of ozone insufflation were noted. Success of the treatment was based upon the cessation of the discharge and closure of the anorectal fistula at the end of the treatment. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 23. Results: Out of 57 patients, 19 received 60 volume of ozone, 23 received 120 volume of ozone and 15 received 180 volume of ozone. Mean of sessions of treatment was 8.29+-3.66. Closure of the fistula was seen in only 14 patients (24.6%) while 43 (75.4%) did not show any improvements or they had reoccurrence of anorectal fistula after getting treatment with ozone. Conclusion: Ozone insufflation is not a promising treatment option for the treatment of anorectal fistula. There were no side effects of ozone insufflation. Further studies are required with larger sample size.
