Pak Paed J Jan ;27(2):78-80.

Objective: To find out the pattern of snake bite in pediatric patients at Bahawalpur. Design: This was an observational analytical study carried out on 50 cases of snake bite. Subject: Fifty consecutive cases of snake bite. Results: Study comprised of 50 cases of snake bite admitted through causalty Department of B V Hospital, Bahawalpur. Male to Female ratio was 90:10, most of the cases were in age group 11-15 years and majority of these cases (50%) occurred during the rainy season (July-June). Legs were the most common sites of snake bites in 48% of cases and in half of the cases, the bites occurred during night time. About 60% of the victims of snake bites were subjected to local remedies of various types by non-technical personnel. Almost all cases of snake bite in our study population were frightened. Pain and local swelling were among the commonest presenting features. Conclusion: Most of the remedies and measures taken prior to medical treatment cause an undue delay in initiation of proper management at the tertiary care health outlets. Such practices must be discouraged. Early hospitalization and therefore early management at an institution should be encouraged.
