Streptococcus pyogenes group A: Predominant and common cause of pharyngitis in Sukkur city.
Pak J Med Res Jan ;42(2):61-3.

One thousands four hundred seventy two individuals were screened for ß-haemolytic Group A isolates. Swabs were taken from healthy (640), moderate (514) and individuals with severe pharyngitis (218). Results showed that 13.1% of healthy individuals were at silent risk group (carriers) of Group A streptococcal strains. Also 60.7% of moderate and 78.8% of severe pharyngitis gave streptococcal isolates. This alarming finding suggests that the strains of Streptococcus pyogenes Group A can also cause pharyngitis in adult (though popularly and predominantly known for causing pharyngitis in children) and there is an urgent need to have survey of pharyngitis in other parts of Pakistan. Also important is to have proper and accurate microbiologic diagnosis and treatment
