Surgical Management of Colorectal Carcinoma.

A three years study from May 1995 to April 1998 of the management of carcinoma of the colon and rectum was carried-out at the Department of Surgery, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore. This study comprised of 27 patients with colorectal carcinoma. Mean age of the patients was 62 years with a male preponderance. Five patients presented as emergency. Surgical procedures for these patients included curative resection, palliative resection and palliative diversion. As regards the site of tumour rectosigmoid lesions encompassed 63%, caecum and ascending colonic lesions accounted for 22% and transverse and descending colonic lesions for 15% of the total cases. There was no operative mortality. Incidence of anastomotic leakage was 8%. Mean hospital stay was 14 days.
