Pak Paed J Jan ;27(4):169-73.

A retrospective review was performed on 200 consecutive patients of meningitis, admitted to the Department of Pediatrics, Mayo Hospital Lahore from October 1999 to November 2000. The patients were between the ages of 1 month to 12 years with mean age of 2.25 years. Male to female ratio was 2.1:1. The diagnosis was confirmed on CSF cytology, chemistry, smear and culture. The patients were divided into two groups; group A 97 patients, received chloramphenicol along with either benzyl penicillin or ampicillin while 103 patients in group B received cefotaxime, ceftriaxone or ceftazidime. The outcome of these two groups regarding cure, complications and deaths was compared. It was seen that cure rate and complications were comparable between to two group with P values of 0.0505 and 0.0598 which are not statistically significant. The deaths were more in group B as compared to group I (14 vs. 5 respectively) with P value of 0.0419 which was statistically significant. Benzyl penicillin and chloramphenicol were effective antibiotics for meningitis at our centre.
