Rheumatic fever is the most important cause of acquired heart disease in children worldwide. The disease is especially rampant in the underdeveloped world. Recent advances in the fields of genetics and molecular biology have provided new insights in the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of rheumatic fever and presented with opportunities for devising new preventive strategies for this distressing disease.
