Changes in blood - cells due to their interactions with different membrane oxygenators during Cardiopulmonary Bypass.
Pak J Cardiol Jan ;15(1):25-35.

The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of hollow fibre membrane oxygenators, on the basis of hematological parameters. In this study the data of the Cobe Optima, Bard Quantum, Jostra Quadrox and Affinity oxygenators were evaluated during the cardiac surgery in comparable patient groups at AFIC/NIHD. Thirty consecutive patients, scheduled for elective surgery, were randomly assigned in each group. There were no statistically significant differences in either preoperative or operative parameters among the four groups. Blood samples were taken before, during and after CPB for the evaluation of changes in blood cells, hemolysis and post operative morbidity and mortality. Difference with respect to postoperative morbidity and mortality were non significant among groups (p=0. 19). Although the accumulated data demonstrates that the Cobe-optim and the Affinity oxygenators show relatively better performance but still do not show any conformity among the individual models. This study provides guidelines for the evaluation and selection of devices which might reduce post operative sequelae.
