Pak J Pathol Jan ;11(4):11-4.

Two hundred cases of fibrocystic disease of breast were studied to find out age frequency of this disease in our population and its various morphological patterns. This included both retrospective (100) and prospective (100) cases. Majority (65.5%) of the patients with fibrocystic disease of breast were between 31 and 50 years of age, whereas peak incidence (36%) was between 31 and 40 years. Considering the morphological patterns, fibrosis of variable degrees was the commonest feature (98%). Cystic dilatation of variable extent of mammary ducts and acini was seen in 95% of the patients, while 37.5% showed epitheliosis, 11% revealed adenosis and 27.5% apocrine metaplasia. Twelve patients showed papillomatoid hyperplasia, 3 myoepithelial hyperplasia and 2 mucous metaplasia. Lymphocytic infiltration of mammary interstitial tissue was present in 41% of cases. In conclusion, the incidence of fibrocystic disease increases with advancing age of the women and fibrosis of variable degree is the commonest feature.
