Incidence of Discitis after Lumbar Disc Surgery.

It is a prospective study of three hundred (300) cases of PIVD in the lumbar region. These cases were operated in Lahore General Hospital, Lahore and Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur during two (2) years period from September, 1995 to September, 1997. Seven (7) cases (2.3%) out of three hundred (300) cases developed discitis post operatively. The condition was diagnosed clinically and by haematological examination i.e., estimation of ESR, that was raised in all the cases. Radiological changes were also found in two cases. All the patients were treated conservatively i.e., with antibiotics and complete bed rest. Six (85%) patients responded well to this treatment but one patient (15%) did not improve and was subjected to surgery.
