Frequency of childhood cancers.

A retrospective analysis was done to determine the frequency of cancer in children. This study was conducted in the department of Pediatrics, King Edward Medical College and Mayo Hospital, Lahore from 1993 to 2000. A total of 531 children suffering from various cancers were included. Acute Iymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) was the most common childhood cancer (41.81%) followed by acute mveloid leukemia (AML - 20.15%) and Hodgkin`s disease (HD-13.56%). Male to female ratio was 2:1 and mean age was 5.8 years. We observed high frequency of ALL L2 (46%), AML M1 (33%), AML M3 (12%) and mixed cellularity HD (66.67%). The case fatality was 30%. In conclusion we determined that hematological malignancies are more common in our children and the frequency of mixed HD very high.
