Pak J Med Res Jan ;43(2):52-5.

Ticks play an important role as vector in zoonosis including diseases with grave consequences like viral haemorrhagic fever. In agricultural countries as ours, animal health in addition to human well being is of considerable public health significance. During the present study a total of 730 Ixodidae ticks were collected from 75 animals including 30 cattle, 21 buffaloes, 18 goats and 6 sheep from Rawalpindi and Islamabad area. The collection was made from four localities i.e. Adyiala road, Dhamial camp, Sehala and Dhok Abdullah from July 2002 to May 2003. The ticks were identified as per criteria of Hoogstraal. Five species of ticks, Haemaphysalis (H) sulcata 74%, Hyalomma anatolicum 14 %, Hyalommma anatolicum anatolicum 12 %, Hyalomma marginatum 0.1 % and Haemaphysalis (R) erinacei 0.1% have been found. The prevalence of Haemaphysalis (H) sulcata and Hyalomma anatolicum was highly significant.
