Pak Paed J Jan ;46(3):269-74.

Objective: To compare the mean duration of remission of nephrotic syndrome in children treated with and without supplementary zinc. Study Design: Quasi experimental study design Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out at the Pediatric Department, Lahore General Hospital for a period of six months i.e. from April/2022 till September/2022. Material and Methods: 50 children were given prednisolone at a dose of 2 mg/kg per day for 6 weeks and were then randomly divided into 2 groups of 25 children each. In group A, zinc sulphate was given orally at the dosage of 10 mg/day in 1 years. Group B was not given any additional supplements. The patients were followed till the remission of the disease as calculated in days and was presented as mean. Results: The mean age of the children was 8.38 +- 4.01, mean weight was 30 +- 13.13, mean zinc levels in the serum at presentation were 95.6 +- 13.48. Mean duration of early remission (in days) in group A was 13.36 +- 5.85, whereas in group B was 16.9 +- 6.58. Independent t-test was performed and it was found that the difference was statistically significant between the two groups in terms of duration of early remission as indicated by a p value of 0.049. Conclusion: Supplementation with zinc had less mean duration of early remission compared to the group without it.
