Effect of the size of Spinal Needle on post-spinal puncture headache.
Biomedica Jan ;20(1):48-51.

Post-spinal headache is one of the most common complications of spinal anaesthesia. It is affected by factors such as size and type of needle, gender and age of the patients, anaesthetic agent used and posture after administering spinal anaesthesia. The present study was designed to determine the occurrence of post-spinal headache in young surgical patients and to study the effect of variation of needle size on post-spinal headache. It was a prospective interventional study. Eighty patients were divided into 2 separate groups. Group I was given spinal anaesthesia with 23-gauge Quincke needle and Group II was given spinal anaesthesia with 25-gauage Quincke needle. In both the groups the patients were randomly selected and were blind to spinal needle size. The data was analysed using Chi-square test, P-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. The proportion of patients with post-spinal headache after 23 gauge needle was significantly more than those with 25 gauge.
