Objective: Purpose of the study was to find out the prevalence of dyslipidemia in patients of newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) attending Federal Government Polyclinic (PGMI) Islamabad. Study type, settings & duration: A cross sectional study was carried out at Federal Government Poly Clinic (PGMI), Islamabad from November 2022 to January 2023.   Methodology: The participants consisted of 125 individuals (60 males and 65 females) who had been recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Individuals who had previously been diagnosed with diabetes or were taking lipid-lowering medication were not included in the study. The levels of blood glucose fasting, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and HDL were documented by standard methods for analysis. Data was entered, cleaned and analyzed by using SPSS (Version 20.0). Results: Of the total, 69 (55.2%) patients had hypercholesterolemia, 73 (58.4%) had hypertriglyceridemia, 63 (50.4%) had increased levels of LDL and 90 (72%) had reduced HDL. The incidence of dyslipidemia was more in female participants of diabetes mellitus as compared to male participants of diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: This study found a high incidence of dyslipidemia among recently diagnosed patients of T2DM regardless of gender. The risk of dyslipidemia was increased by factors such as body mass index, age, waist circumference, hypertension, lack of physical activity and tobacco use. It is important to increase awareness regarding dyslipidemia and its related risk factors.
