Role of Papanicolaou Stained Smears in the Diagnosis of Chlamydia Trachomatis Cervicitis.
Biomedica Jan ;15:108-11.

Cervical Smears (Papanicolaou Stained) of two hundred and seventy two women including both pregnant (120 women) and non-pregnant (150 women) were examined to diagnose Chlamydial trachomatis infection. Cervical secretions samples were also taken to detect Chlamydia (Antigen) by Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). By Pap smears, out of 122 pregnant women 23 (18.85%) and out of 150 non-pregnant, 32 (21.34%) were considered positive for Chlamydia trachomatis by using cytologic criteria whereas by ELISA, 10 (8.19%) pregnant and 19 (12.66%) non-pregnant women were reactive (Positive) for Chlamydial antigen. The Pap smears gave about 10% false positivity. However two false negative cases were also seen. The correlation between Pap smears and ELISA was highly significant (P < 0.05).
