Pak Postgrad Med J Jan ;12(3):95-101.

A prospective study was carried out at Lahore General Hospital, Lahore from August, 1999 to July, 2000. Aim of the study was to assess neonatal and perinatal mortality and its principal causes at Lahore General Hospital, Lahore, which is situated in South of Lahore. It drains extremely low socio-economic areas and is the only tertiary referral center for many districts in the South. Total number of births during this period was 3307 and perinatal mortality was 406. 317 (78%) patients were received with negative fetal heart. In these cases, nothing could be done to save the pregnancies. During admission detailed counseling was done to prevent further mishaps. Social status and education level of the parents was also studied to observe the effect of social status and education level on perinatal mortality. Birth weight is observed to be a major factor that affects survival mortality in early life but even as late as five years of age. 50% of the neonates were less than 2.5 Kg. Perinatal mortality significantly reduces in families who have better income and have regular antenatal care. Educating the mother about the factors that affect the perinatal mortality can appreciably reduce the rate. Community health workers, if properly trained, can play very important role in reducing perinatal mortality.
