Depression and prevalence of sexual dysfunction.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in patients with depression. Design: This was a descriptive case control study. Place and duration: The study was conducted in the Department of Medicine, Federal Government Services Hospital Islamabad, during the period of January 2003 to August 2003. Subject and methods: In this study 117 patients and same number of case control cases were included. All newly diagnosed patients between the age group of 16-60 years and of both sexes, fulfilling the DSM-1V criteria were included and those patients who were not fitting in these criteria were taken as case control. Patients with schizophrenia, manic depression, drug induced mental disorder, dementia, stroke, complicated diabetes, advanced renal, hepatic, heart and pulmonary diseases were excluded. Results: In this study out of 234 cases 117 were patients (65 males and 52 females) and 117 were control cases (67 males and 50 females). Out of 117 patients sexual dysfunction were present in 49 cases which included 39 males and 10 females (P=. 003), while in control group sexual dysfunction were present in 13 patients which included 7 males and 6 females (P=. 251). Loss of libido was present in 35 patients with 25 males and 10 females (P= .007), while in control group loss of libido was present in 12 patients which included 6 males and 6 females (P=. 197). Fourteen males patients were impotent (P=. 039), while in control group only one male was impotent. Conclusion: Statistically significant numbers of patients were having sexual dysfunction as compared to control group. We conclude that depression is one of the contributing factors for sexual dysfunction.
