Annual prevalence of various diseases in hospitalized patients in a tertiary level teaching hospital at Peshawar.

This descriptive study involves the systematic collection of data during a calendar year 2001 at Hayatabad Medical Complex (a teaching / tertiary health facility) Peshawar. The main objective of this study was to analyse total annual admission of the hospital to find out frequency/ pattern of various commons and major diseases among patients admitted for indoor treatment. The total annual admission of the hospital was 35482 patients, out of them 46% were males and 54% females. Of total admission of the hospital 28% (9893) were the admission of Gynaecology and Obstetrics Unit, followed by Paediatrics and Ophthalmology units, 10% and 8.5% respectively. Among total admission of Gynaecology and Obstetrics Unit, Full Term Pregnancy (FTP) was leading in diseases with 36% of the admission, while infertility and Fibroid uterus were 21% and 6.5% respectively. In Paediatrics unit gastroenteritis/diarrhoea was leading disease with 25% of the annual unit`s admission, in Medical unit, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD) were 17% and Pleural effusion of various causes 9%. In ENT unit 62% of the unit`s admission was made for tonsillectomy/adenidectomy and in ophthalmology unit 57.5% patients were treated for cataract. Among other units, 23% of the total admission of Gastroenterology was made for treatment of liver related diseases, in Cardiology 22.5% and 14.5% of the unit`s annual admission were treated for Congestive Cardiac Failure (CCF) and Acute Myocardial Infection (AMI) respectively.
